Monday night, I made a "green smoothie" with a ton on spinach in it.
Tuesday morning, I went to a yoga class, as usual. Wasn't feeling well, but somehow made it until the end.
I immediately got on the phone, canceled my appointments for the day, and went home to take a nap. Woke up and that's when things took a turn for the worse...
If you've ever had food poisoning before, you know what a bitch it is. I felt like I was pregnant with Rosemary's Baby inside me. And to make things worse, in addition to having to reschedule my missed appointments, I was on deadline for a big project and unable to do anything with it.
So what do you do when this happens?
There is only one thing you can do... Wait.
So that's what I did.
What else could I have done? Nothing that would have been effective.
As I was hugging the toilet, sweating so much the floor around me was soaking wet and praying to God that I'd live to see another day, I started to think about how the situation was very similar to what people who run businesses experience.
Two things came to mind...
1. Some things are better left alone. Let them run the course, do whatever damage they're doing to do, and worry about fixing everything when it's all done. Fighting it only prolongs things.
2. Sometimes you have to walk away for a while. Leave the "mess" where it is and come back to it with a different approach later, because nothing you do right now is going to change anything.
Questions to ask yourself:
What do I need to let run its course?
What do I need to walk away from?
